Tackling Crime: Selly Oak ward councillors Robert Wright (centre) and Alistair Dow (right) are campaigning for more police officers, effective action and prisons that work.

Local campaigners in Birmingham are backing a major Liberal Democrat campaign to make Britain a safer place to live.

The campaign, launched by party leader Ming Campbell, is calling for effective action to take back our neighbourhoods and local centres. Other priorities include putting more police on patrol and making prison work.

Ming Campbell said: "It makes me angry when I meet ordinary hard working people who have had their lives ruined by the effects of crime and anti-social behaviour. Too often, many people are fearful of going out after dark."

Selly Oak ward councillor Robert Wright said: "More police on our streets will be an effective deterrent to crime and anti-social behaviour."

More police can be paid for by dropping Labour's expensive plans for ID cards. These will cost local people hundreds of pounds each without making Birmingham any safer.

We Can Cut Crime bannerLib Dem Home Affairs Spokesman Nick Clegg MP said: "Instead of spending billions on an ID card scheme, that money should be targeted at catching criminals and bringing them to justice."
